Weapon of Choice

White Marble

NEW WORK

This style of carving can un-nerve and disconcert those who like their black art ‘naive’, ‘earthy’, ‘primitive’, ‘exotic’ or ‘colourful’, especially the work of a black female artist. Here marble is being used which is usually closely identified with European art and is easily taken for granted as the chief material for the most serious sculpture. A new series of marble pieces called ‘New Antiquities’, of which this is the third.

Having carved ‘Gun Culture’ previously (see Stone page), I heard that the real ‘weapon of choice’ for gang members was the Stanley knife, easier to procure, easier to carry. The ribbons play a part in this new piece as with the gun where it was representative of a smoking barrel. Here they refer to the term ‘to cut to ribbons’. The carving, again is very deliberately executed in a traditional medium and manner, but from a scrap of marble that had been found in a skip.
