Paper There is an emphasis on drawing as a necessary step to a finished piece and is significant in its own right. Both in the stone work and drawings there is an acknowledged influence of Dutch and Spanish still life's. Drawings such as ‘Torso (Ginger)’ show both an obsessive attention to the physical detail and volume of an insignificant chunk of ginger, and, on a fairly direct level, an almost expressionist and anthropomorphic interpretation of its twisted roots. The end result can be read as an implicit echo of a human torso. Yet what is remarkable about this and other drawings is they are still very much what they are: straight forward illustrations of everyday objects, whilst still giving off a strong sense of sinister otherness. |
